The Final of our Men’s Singles match-play Knock-Out, The Hawkins Trophy, was played today (9th September). The finalists were Jack Alder (14 hcp) v’s Harry Redman (5 hcp), therefore giving 8 shots. The Referee for the match was Paul Ellis.
It was an exciting match with only four of the eighteen holes halved.
The game progressed with Jack winning the second hole then Harry won the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth to go 4 up.
Jack then fought back, winning the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth to level the match again. After the next three holes the game was still level.
Harry won the sixteenth with a really long putt to go 1 up.
They both made errors and halved the seventeenth with bogeys, so down the eighteenth.
Jacks drive was good and, on the fairway. Harry was long but in the right rough. Jack laid up well but then pulled his approach left of the green. Harry, in the meantime played on the green in three. Unfortunately for Jack, Harry holed for a birdie and won the match 2 up.
A great Final with excellent golf. Commiserations to Jack and congratulations to Harry, who at 15 years old, must be the youngest winner of this 105-year-old trophy.
